Beside each entry, in a hand nobody recognizes, are the same three words: \u003cem\u003eroad, no rider.\u003c\/em\u003e New volunteers are shown the page once during orientation and thereafter discouraged from asking about it, which is considered a perfectly reasonable precaution in Sleepy Hollow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eWhat can be said, and is said, freely and often at the diner on Route 9 where the department takes its coffee, is this: certain roads in the Hollow narrow considerably after dark, in a manner that has nothing to do with the trees, which have not moved in two hundred years and presumably do not intend to start. Horses, historically, do not care for these roads after sundown, and a horse's opinion on the matter is generally regarded as final by everyone except the rider. The department's oldest standing rule — older than radios, older than the paved lot behind the firehouse, older, some claim, than the department itself — is a simple one, printed nowhere official but understood by every volunteer within a week of joining: if you're called out after midnight and you hear something behind you on the trail, keep walking. Whatever's back there is either not your business, or it is entirely your business, and either way turning around has never once improved anybody's evening.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe pumpkin is a newer wrinkle, relatively speaking — a matter of decades rather than centuries — and it shows up in the reports with a regularity that the department's official incident forms are not really designed to accommodate. Found shattered, at the tree line, near where the road gives out. Found whole, oddly, once, sitting upright on a fence post half a mile from where the search had actually been conducted. Nobody on staff has an explanation for the pumpkin, and this is generally agreed to be for the best, since the one volunteer who spent a winter trying to find one eventually put in for a transfer to the county over and has not, so far as anyone knows, been heard from since on the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eSo the shirt says what the badge has always meant, more or less, in fewer words than the ledger uses: if you hear the hooves, don't look back. It isn't bravado. The department would like it on record that bravado gets people found in pieces they'd rather not discuss, and found is, after all, the job. It is simply that somewhere around the fourth generation of Sleepy Hollow Search \u0026amp; Rescue, somebody worked out that the difference between the volunteers who came home and the ones whose saddles came home without them was never speed, or strength, or nerve. It was whether, on the long walk back, curiosity got the better of them.
